How to Plan a Road Trip: From Car Rentals to National Parks

The Great American Road Trip is an incomparable experience. Driving three thousand miles is no easy task and there are a lot of things to see along the way.  Read on to see what I mean.

1. The Destination: Before you can pick a route, you need a destination. If you're going from the East Coast, you should decide whether you want to see L.A. or Seattle.

2. The Route: Let's say you want to visit Southern California to get away from the Eastern winter. You will take the Southern Route. The beauty of our country is that because there are fifty states you have a lot of options. For example, you could drive to Chicago and take Route 66, or you can drive in a kind of diagonal, hitting the sites you want to see.

3. National Parks: You probably want to research which parks you'll hit along the way. The Great Smoky Mountains in North Carolina and north in Tennessee are worth seeing, Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico, the Grand Canyon and Saguaro National Parks in Arizona, and if you have some extra time, the Grand Circle in Utah for Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Arches, Zion, Monument Valley, and Mesa Verde in Colorado are all extraordinarily beautiful and worth seeing before you die.

4. Cities: There are lots of great American cities, and some you may want to visit along the way are: Chicago, New Orleans, St. Louis, Kansas City, Wichita, Dallas, Little Rock, Albuquerque, Memphis, Nashville, and more. Although it can be expensive to stay the night in cities, you can take advantage by staying off the main drag, and visiting some cultural spots on the way.

5. Car Rentals: You can rent a car for a one-way road trip if time is tight and you want to fly home from your destination, or you can drive back along a different route.  It's important to have enough space in your car to hold all your bags, potential souvenirs, and food you bring along. Being cramped in a small car for eight hours a day can be very uncomfortable. And be prepared - two weeks is a good amount of time to drive comfortably across country, although if you wanted to, you could do it in as little as four days.

6. What to Bring: All you really need is a sense of adventure, but if you're driving during the colder months, be prepared for inclement weather - even if you're taking the southern route. There are lots of areas with high elevation  that receive snow year round.  A cross-country road trip is an unforgettable experience. No matter which states, parks and cities you decide to visit, you will remember your journey for a long time.
